UNESCO Partnership

AMNH Expeditions and UNESCO's World Heritage Centre
are working together to offer educational travel opportunities that focus on the profound importance of preservation of significant natural and man-made sites. Together, we seek to increase the public’s awareness of the need to protect the values of World Heritage sites.

Through this collaboration, AMNH Expeditions travelers, led by UNESCO experts and site managers, enjoy behind-the-scenes access to World Heritage sites and their critical conservation processes.

The UNESCO World Heritage Expeditions series was launched in 2008 with two extraordinary trips: one to the myriad sites in Turkey and another to Mesoamerica’s natural and cultural treasures in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. In April 2009, travelers explored the ancient Silk Road *.

“This trip was fabulous! Every day was an adventure. I loved traveling to places where few Americans can be found. I felt a fascinating connection with the people of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan – the World Heritage sites were great; the people were the highlight.”
- Traveler, Allison Davis O’Keefe

In September 2010, we return to Turkey with UNESCO World Heritage Centre Assistant Programme Specialist Junaid Sorosh-Wali . Learn more about this upcoming expedition. A Turkish Odyssey

“Turkey itself is such a rich combination of history and healthy nationalism - so exciting to experience this place and its people"

"The magical moment occurred when I stepped out of the waterfront restaurant in Istanbul and found myself surrounded by scores of local folks enjoying the evening. I felt the rhythm of exotic Istanbul and wanted to stay!"

"The experience in total was outstanding and met all hopes and desires - beautifully planned and orchestrated. Our guide was wonderful and lectures were outstanding."

The World Heritage Convention was adopted by UNESCO in 1972. This internationally recognized instrument was developed following a White House Conference in 1965 to provide appropriate legal protection to both cultural and natural heritage. UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre was created in 1992 as a dedicated body responsible for cooperation with countries to identify, raise awareness of, and ensure the safeguarding of cultural and natural sites recognized for their outstanding universal value.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication are the means to a far more ambitious goal: to build peace in the minds of men. Today, UNESCO functions as a laboratory of ideas and a standard-setter to forge universal agreements on emerging ethical issues. The Organization also serves as a clearinghouse – for the dissemination and sharing of information and knowledge – while helping Member States to build their human and institutional capacities in diverse fields.

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific, educational, and cultural institutions. Since its founding in 1869, the Museum has advanced its global mission to explore and interpret human cultures and the natural world through a wide-reaching program of scientific research, education, and exhibitions. The Museum accomplishes this ambitious goal through its extensive facilities and resources. The institution houses 46 permanent exhibition halls, state-of-the-art research laboratories, one of the largest natural history libraries in the Western Hemisphere, and a permanent collection of more than 30 million specimens and cultural artifacts. With a scientific staff of more than 200, the Museum supports research divisions in Anthropology, Paleontology, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Zoology, and the Physical Sciences. The Museum shares its treasures and discoveries with approximately four million on-site visitors from around the world each year. AMNH-produced exhibitions and Space Shows can currently be seen in venues on five continents reaching an audience of millions. In addition, the Museum’s Web site extends its collections, exhibitions, and educational programs to millions more beyond the Museum’s walls.
