The vast and remote wilderness of Antarctica is truly a unique travel destination – the coldest, driest, and highest continent on Earth. Join fellow adventurers during the austral summer, when the days are long and relatively mild; seabirds are courting; adult penguins are tending their chicks; and massive icebergs thaw into sculptures of brilliant form and color.
Begin the adventure in Ushuaia and explore the splendid Tierra del Fuego National Park, celebrated for its snow-capped mountains, lakes, and islands. Embark Corinthian II and enjoy a vista of glaciers as the ship navigates the Beagle Channel to begin the journey to Antarctica. Attend lectures given by the onboard team of naturalists as the ship sails through the Drake Passage. Look for Albatross, Cape Petrels, and whales that may accompany the ship, and perhaps join Mr. Quinn for an introduction to wildlife sketching workshop.
Discover the pristine wilderness of the Antarctic Peninsula, a narrow finger of land separating the Weddell and Bellingshausen Seas. Each day presents a new discovery: cruise through ice-filled channels; observe crowded penguin rookeries; view whales cavorting in the sparkling waters; and if conditions permit, visit with scientists at research stations. The ship’s fleet of Zodiac landing craft allows for up-close viewing of the striking scenery and abundant wildlife.
Weather permitting, land at such places as Paradise Harbour, where humpback and minke whales are often sighted offshore; Petermann Island, the habitat of Gentoo and Adelie Penguins; and Deception Island, known for its volcanic hot springs. Voyages through the magnificent Lemaire, Errera, Neumeyer, and other protected channels are also planned.
